In this day and age where cars have become more sophisticated than ever, it is very important to know how to choose an auto repair shop to fix your car.  There are very few cars that go from the dealer lot to the junkyard without having to run across the repair shop a few times and it can be a scary experience. in particular if you do not know what you are doing.  We have all heard the horror stories of people getting ripped off when they go to have their cars fixed, but if you do just a little bit of work you can save yourself a lot of money and heartache.

The number one factor to rely on when choosing a shop is the reputation.  These days good news travels fast and bad news travels faster.  If you ask friends and co-workers who they have used and who they recommend, there is sure to be no shortage of suggestions.  If one shop keeps coming up as a problem, run for the hills but if another keeps coming up as great you have your answer.

Another factor you may want to consider is the actual appearance of the shop.  If it looks dirty and unorganized, you can be pretty sure that their work is done with the same attention to detail.  A nice storefront with a comfortable waiting room is commonly a sign that the shop cares about their customers and the quality of their work.  They also are not afraid to have you sitting there and listening when they work, which is also a good sign

One key factor is to look and see what kind of credential and diplomas are dangling on the wall.  For example if the shop has a certificate from Automotive Training Institute it means that the shop management cares enough to complete a comprehensive course in how to effectively run their shop.  ATI certification was created by a guy named Chubby Frederick, who has been in the business for more than a one-fourth of a century and knows how to run a shop.  Another great one to look for is AAA or the Better Business Bureau.  These all mean that the shop owner cares about his business, his reputation and most significantly his customers.

While these are not the only factors in choosing an auto repair shop, they are a good start.  Best of luck in your search!
